The Ogun State local government election has been criticized as a troubling moment for Nigeria’s democracy, following widespread reports of violence, voter suppression, and the unlawful detention of opposition members.
Hon. Ogayemi Olamigoke, a PDP House of Representatives aspirant for Ijebu Federal Constituency, issued a statement condemning the irregularities and violence that plagued the election. He described the incidents as deliberate attempts to undermine democracy and silence the voices of the people.
“The acts of violence, voter intimidation, and destruction of electoral materials observed at numerous polling units are unacceptable,” Olamigoke said. “Democracy cannot thrive in an atmosphere of fear and lawlessness.”
Olamigoke also decried the arrest and continued detention of Gafar Asaolu, an aide to opposition leader Hon. Ladi Adebutu. Asaolu has reportedly been held without charges, beyond the constitutionally mandated time limit, which Olamigoke described as a “targeted act of political victimization.”
“This is a clear violation of Mr. Asaolu’s fundamental rights as enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution,” Olamigoke stated. “The Ogun State Police Command must immediately release him or charge him in accordance with the law. Political interests must not override the rule of law.”
He further called on Governor Dapo Abiodun and the Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission (OGSIEC) to investigate the violence and irregularities, urging them to take responsibility for the election’s flaws.

“The people of Ogun State deserve free, fair, and credible elections that reflect their true mandate,” he said.
Olamigoke called on civil society organizations, well-meaning Nigerians, and the international community to join in condemning the violence and demanding justice for victims of the flawed electoral process.
He concluded by reaffirming his commitment to democracy and accountability, vowing to stand against injustice and advocate for the rights of Ogun State citizens.
