Kano’s Suspicious Judgment: NJC Moves To Hammer Judges Involved

The National Judicial Council (NJC) is gearing up to investigate the controversies surrounding the certified true copy (CTC) of the Kano State governorship election appeal held at the Court of Appeal in Abuja.

This announcement was made during a visit by NJC officials to the headquarters of Media Trust Ltd in Abuja.

Regarding the confusion and widespread criticism surrounding the CTC of the November 17 judgment by the appellate court, which nullified the election of Governor Abba Kabiru Yusuf in favor of the All Progressives Congress (APC)’s Yusuf Gawuna due to alleged non-membership in the party, Chief Registrar of the Court of Appeal, Umar Mohammed Bangari, acknowledged clerical errors in the document on November 17. However, he insisted that the judgment itself remains valid.

In an interview, the leader of the NJC delegation confirmed that petitions related to the matter have been received. He explained the procedural steps the council will take, stating, “The petitions that have been written would not be taken immediately, they would have to go through the preliminary complaint assessment, those people would look at it, then send to the plenary, then plenary would look at it and they would set up a committee to look into it, and the judge and the petitioner would come with their lawyers.”

The senior NJC official emphasized that even though Governor Yusuf’s counsel has included the CTC as part of the subjects of appeal before the Supreme Court, this would not deter the NJC’s independent investigation.
