I Better Leave On Time Before It Is Too Late – Top Emirate Chief Resigns Over Fear Of New Law Amendment

Shortly after the Kano State House of Assembly initiated steps to review and amend the Kano Emirate Council laws, Musa Iliyasu Kwankwaso, a prominent figure in the Karaye Emirate, has resigned from his position as Sarkin Karaye (Defence Minister of Karaye).

He cited concerns over the uncertainty surrounding the legislative move. In a statement shared via social media, Kwankwaso expressed his reasons for resigning, stating, “I better leave on time before it is too late and sent packing. The whole thing has been politicized. It is a new norm now for every regime that come to power to appoint it’s Emirs. It is for the APC to remained calm and work towards snatching powers in 2027 and appoint our own Emir.”

The acceptance of Kwankwaso’s resignation by the Emirate remains unclear. Karaye is among the four newly established Emirates in the state.

Meanwhile, heavy security presence has been reported at the Audu Bako Secretariat, the Assembly’s seat, amid the unfolding developments.

The Kano State House of Assembly had earlier initiated the process to revisit and amend the Kano State Emirate Council Law 2019 and the Kano State Emirate Amendment Law 2023, with the legislation passing its first reading on Wednesday.
