A fuel tanker explosion in the Amoke village of Apa Local Government Area in Benue State is said to have killed dozens of people.

According to News Direct, the event occurred on Monday morning when a vehicle transporting petroleum product caught fire in the region.

The number of deaths could not be determined at the time, according to an eyewitness, Godfrey Idede, who spoke with a News Direct correspondent.

He said the incident caused panic in the area and brought commercial activity to a halt.

While verifying the event to newsmen, Yakubu Mohammed, the Corps Commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) in Benue State, stated only three people were killed.

Apart from the three casualties, Mohammed said no one else was injured in the terrible tragedy, which he blamed on brake failure.

He added that the fire was extinguished after many hours and that there was no Fire Department stationed near the incident.
