Fire Guts Popular Market In Enugu

A popular market in Enugu has been gutted by raging fire which destroyed goods worth huge sum of money.

At least five shops were destroyed by fire on Tuesday at the timber market on Kenyatta Street in Uwani, Enugu, according to a report by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

The swift response from the state Fire Service prevented the fire from spreading to other areas of the plywood market.

A firefighter, who wished to remain anonymous, stated that the service received a distress call around 9:45 pm about the market fire and immediately took action, containing the blaze before it could spread further.

“As you can see, only about five shops were affected by the fire in this large market. I cannot provide more details as I am not the Chief Fire Officer,” the firefighter said.

Meanwhile, an eyewitness named Joe told reporters that he noticed the fire right after the nationwide industrial strike by labour unions was suspended. He stated that some residents rushed to the market and, within a few minutes, the fire service arrived and extinguished the fire.

“I thank God and the fire service for the quick response; otherwise, it would have been disastrous,” Joe said.
