Fear Spreads As Soldiers Invade Bayelsa, Kill 40 After Colleagues Were Killed In Delta
In the aftermath of the recent killings of military personnel in Okuama Community, Delta State, the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) has leveled accusations against the military, alleging an invasion of Igbomotoru 2 in Bomo-Ibe Clan, Bayelsa State, resulting in the loss of 40 lives.
President of the IYC, Dr. Alaye Theophilus, emphasized, “We as a council condemn in its totality the killing of military personnel on official peacekeeping assignment at Okuama Community in Delta State.”
Dr. Theophilus clarified the geographical distinction, stating, “This incident is devilish and inhuman and therefore, no sane minded person can support such an act in any guise.”
Furthermore, the IYC has taken proactive measures, establishing an investigation and fact-finding team to collaborate with security agencies. Dr. Theophilus asserted, “The council has also set up an investigation and fact-finding team which is open to supporting the military and other security agencies to get to the root cause of the matter.”
Expressing broader concerns, Dr. Theophilus stressed the council’s commitment to regional stability, declaring, “We, as the largest ethnic block in the Niger Delta region, are concerned about the stability and business-friendly environment of the oil-rich region.”
Urging restraint and highlighting the humanitarian crisis, Dr. Theophilus called for intervention, stating, “What is happening in this community is purely a humanitarian crisis… People are now starving to death.”
The IYC implored President Bola Tinubu and the Chief of Defence Staff to address the escalating situation, emphasizing the need for swift action.
