Ex-PDP Governors Declare Bid For 2023 Presidential Ticket

Three former governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have expressed their intention to run for president in 2023.

The news broke after the 94th National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Abuja on Thursday.

Previous Vice President Atiku Abubakar was in attendance, as were PDP Governors led by Chairman and Sokoto Governor Aminu Tambuwal, as well as former and current governors, ministers, and federal lawmakers.

The parley agreed to the zoning committee’s recommendation that the North produce the new National Chairman, which was led by Enugu Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwaunyi.

The presidential ticket, on the other hand, was left open, allowing any qualified member to run.

The Zoning and Convention Planning Committees were chaired by Ugwaunyi and Adamawa Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri, according to Acting National Chairman Yemi Akinwonmi.

The party leadership, according to Wali Jibrin, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, will continue to foster unity among members in order to ensure that the PDP returns to power.

The Northern Caucus of the NEC convened at another site in the nation’s capital after the meeting, according to a source.

The stalwarts assembled in the Bauchi Governor’s Lodge in Asokoro, where some advocated for the chairmanship to be rezoned to the North-Central zone.

However, the plan was roundly rejected, and the position was made available to all contenders.

The council also reviewed the distribution of posts across the 19 Northern states, and all those interested were given till Friday to express their interest.

Following the collation of names and interested portfolios, the caucus is expected to micro-zone some roles to specific states.

Three former Northern Governors and a party executive have confirmed their candidacy for the PDP flagbearership.

Deputy National Chairman (North), ex-Senator Suleiman Nazif, and former Gombe Governor, Ibrahim Dankwambo, are both from the North-East, according to DAILY POST.

Ahmed Makarfi, ex-Kaduna Governor and former PDP Caretaker Chairman, and Ibrahim Shema, former Katsina Governor, are the other two from the North-West.
