EFCC Grills Emefiele On Award of Suspicious Billions Of Naira Contracts, 5 Other Major Allegations

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has initiated a comprehensive investigation into the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele.

The probe, which began yesterday, centers around alleged foreign debts amounting to $15 billion linked to Emefiele. Additionally, Emefiele is expected to provide detailed explanations regarding the expenditure of N74.84 billion by the apex bank for the production and circulation of currencies, including new naira notes.

These allegations have surfaced alongside a separate inquiry conducted by Special Investigator Jim Obazee, who is delving into the activities of the CBN. Obazee’s committee, in collaboration with the Federal Bureau of Investigation of the Nigeria Police, has submitted an interim report on the CBN to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities delve into these serious allegations.

According to inside sources who spoke on the condition of anonymity, it was confirmed that a panel of EFCC operatives had started grilling Emefiele on the allegations against him, including the following:

1. Alleged foreign debts of $15 billion

2. Spending of N74. 84 billion on Naira redesign, production and roll out of currencies

3. Alleged fraud in Anchor Borrowers Scheme

4. Suspicious audit of CBN accounts

5. Acquisition of bank, Fintech licences by some top officials of CBN

6. Award of suspicious billions of Naira contracts
