Edo election: APC resorts to spreading falsehood as desperation heightens
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has been accused of resorting to spreading falsehoods in the lead-up to the Edo State governorship election.
Recent reports have surfaced that the APC planted fake news in certain media outlets, falsely attributing a statement to Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The fabricated news claimed that Prof. Yakubu had alleged that the Edo Security Network was planning to disrupt the upcoming election scheduled for September 21, 2024.
The misinformation has been widely circulated, raising concerns about the tactics being employed by the APC as the election approaches.
Sources close to INEC have confirmed that Prof. Yakubu did not make any such statements regarding the Edo Security Network or any other group.

INEC officials have denounced the spread of these false claims, affirming that the commission remains focused on ensuring a free, fair, and peaceful election.
An INEC spokesperson who spoke anonymously clarified that the commission has not received any credible intelligence suggesting that the Edo Security Network or any other group intends to disrupt the election.
The spokesperson stated that such baseless accusations only serve to create unnecessary panic and confusion among the electorate.
The APC’s move has been widely criticized by political observers and opponents, who see it as a desperate attempt to undermine the credibility of the election and distract from pressing issues.
Critics argue that spreading false information is a tactic of desperation, reflecting a lack of confidence in the party’s ability to win the election through genuine means.
“The dissemination of fake news is a troubling sign of desperation,” said a representative of the opposition party.
“Rather than engaging in productive political discourse and focusing on their own plans for the state, the APC seems to be resorting to deceitful tactics.
“This not only undermines the integrity of the electoral process but also disrespects the voters’ right to a transparent and honest campaign,” he added.
The Edo State governorship election is anticipated to be highly competitive, with various political parties gearing up for a significant contest.
As the election date draws nearer, stakeholders are urging all parties to adhere to ethical campaign practices and focus on addressing the real issues affecting the state’s development.
