Edo election: Akpata family and close associates warn of Labour Party governorship candidate’s arrogance

Members of the Akpata family and close associates of Olumide Akpata, the Labour Party’s gubernatorial candidate for Edo, have voiced serious concerns over his suitability to be governor of the state.

According to them, Akpata’s inherent arrogance poses a significant threat to effective governance and the well-being of Edo State if he is elected.

Sources close to Akpata, speaking on the condition of anonymity, shared their apprehensions about his demeanour and leadership style. They further stated that Akpata’s arrogance could transform him into a detrimental leader for the state.

One insider from Lagos, who has had multiple personal interactions with Akpata, expressed concerns about his character: “I know Olumide very well. He is a social chap, but he has a problem with arrogance which will make him a terrible governor if elected.”

The source continued, “He is always one to bulldoze his way through discussions, making it clear that his opinion reigns supreme. Imagine someone who even when he is not governor yet is fond of bullying and talking down on people. What will happen when he becomes governor?”

The insider stated that Akpata’s behaviour and approach to leadership have been consistently problematic.

“His arrogance is part of the reason why he refused to allow the power shift to Edo Central. His refusal to respect fairness and inclusivity in the gubernatorial race shows his lack of regard for others,” the source added.

Another member of the Akpata family echoed the same concerns, describing Olumide as “arrogant and with an inflated sense of self-importance,” qualities they believe are detrimental to effective leadership.

The family member warned that Akpata’s leadership style could lead to a calamitous governance experience for the Edo people.

“The traits of arrogance and self-importance that Olumide exhibits are not qualities of a good leader,” the family member said.

“For a leadership position like governor, you need to listen as much as you speak, but Olumide is not that patient. He is too arrogant to consider other people’s opinions,” he added.

The family and associates urged the Edo people to be wary of electing Akpata, warning that it could result in governance marked by authoritarianism and disregard for the people’s voices.

“We are worried for him as a family. His arrogance might lead him to become an emperor and slave master, silencing and bullying the voices of the Edo people,” the source concluded.
