Delta Community Leaders Arrested Over Pipeline Vandalism

Some community leaders of Oviri-Olomu, in the Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State, have been reportedly arrested by security agents over their alleged involvement in the vandalisation of a major oil pipeline which passed through the agrarian community.

PUNCH Metro learnt that those in custody were the Vice President General and the Secretary General of the Oviri-Olomu community, Chief Victor Onadiemor and Chief Austin Etata, respectively.

Our correspondent gathered that the arrest of the community leaders came on the heels of a devastating oil spill which polluted rivers and farmlands in the community.

On noticing the spill, sources said some indigenes raised the alarm and informed security agencies, while operatives embarked on surveillance which allegedly incriminated the community leaders.

Consequently, the president general of the community and others were alleged to have gone into hiding for fear of being picked up by security operatives.

The Chairman of the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights, Delta State, Peter Edariese, in a press release on Thursday, confirmed the development.

“The arrest of the suspects has brought relief to the Oviri-Olomu community and its environs at the moment,” he added.
