A mine collapse in Galkogo village, located in the Shiroro local government area of Niger State, has resulted in one confirmed death, six serious injuries, and 30 people trapped.
The mine is owned by African Minerals and Logistics Limited. The site manager, Alhaji Ibrahim Ishaku, is reportedly among those trapped in the mine pit.
The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) confirmed the incident, attributing the collapse to the impact of recent rainfall, which had softened the soil.
Rescue efforts were hampered as the mine continued to collapse, forcing rescuers to flee. However, six individuals with severe injuries were successfully rescued.
NSEMA Director General Alhaji Abdullahi Baba Arah noted that due to the prevailing insecurity in the area, information about the incident was limited. He added that rescue operations, including the deployment of excavators, are ongoing.
