Sunday Igboho Drags FG To Court Demanding Immediate Release Of His Aides
Chief Sunday Adeyemo, aka Sunday Igboho, has petitioned the Federal High Court in Abuja for the release of his aides who were detained by Department of State Services agents on July 1 at his home in Ibadan’s Soka neighborhood.
Chief Yomi Aliyu (SAN), counsel for the Yoruba Nation agitator, told our correspondent over the phone on Thursday that he had filed a case in Abuja’s Federal High Court for the release of the 13 arrested people.
The lawyer did not reveal the specifics of the lawsuit, but he did say that Igboho’s spokesman, Olayomi Koiki, had published a statement on Wednesday saying that the DSS had refused lawyers access to Igboho’s aides in detention.
“We have filed an action before a Federal High Court in Abuja about their bail,” Aliyu replied when asked what steps he was taking to obtain their release. Today, we filed it.”
On July 1, about 1:30 a.m., the DSS raided Igboho’s home. Two of his aides were killed, and 13 people were arrested, according to the secret police, who also recovered rifles and ammunition.
The guns were planted by the DSS, according to Igboho, who has subsequently disputed the allegations.
In a related event, Ilana Omo Oodua announced that the 49 protestors detained during the Yoruba Nation march in Lagos will be released soon.
Maxwell Adeleye, a spokesman for the Prof. Banji Akintoye-led group, told our correspondent on Thursday that the group’s attorneys were working to obtain the release of the protestors who had been detained for six days.
He said, “We know that they have been in police custody for so many days now but our lawyers are working to ensure their release.
“I don’t want to say what we are doing but i.cam assure you that they will be freed very soon because they did not commit any crime.”
Meanwhile, the Yoruba Ko’ya Liberation Movement, a Yoruba self-determination group, has urged governors in Nigeria’s South-West region to join those asking for the protestors’ release.
Mr Femi Oluwajuyitan, the YKLM’s Director of Media and Publicity, revealed this in a statement released in Ibadan on Thursday.
