NLC Goes Tough, Moves Against Uzodinma After Beating Its President Mercilessly

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has gone tough over the recent attack on its National President, Joe Ajaero.

The NLC and its affiliated unions have vowed to take action against Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma following the brutalization of Ajaero in Owerri, the Imo State capital, on Wednesday.

Governor Uzodimma accused Ajaero of meddling in the state’s politics and insisted that the NLC President should separate his role as a labour leader from being a partisan Imo State indigene. The governor also alleged that Ajaero was attempting to blackmail his government over non-payment of salaries, claiming that all Imo workers had been paid their due wages.

In response to Uzodimma’s statement, the NLC pledged to take appropriate action after a meeting of all its organs. Benson Upah, the Head of Information of the NLC, stated, “There will be a full and appropriate response. As soon as the organs meet, you will be availed the details.”

Additionally, the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics condemned the attack on Ajaero. The union, in a statement signed by its National President Anderson Ezeibe, expressed shock over the attacks on unarmed workers and NLC leadership. ASUP announced its intention to await directives from the NLC regarding the steps to be taken in response to the incident.
