Can Former Mo’Hits’ Star DBanj Hit Those Lofty Heights Again?
For Music Star, Dapo Oyebanjo popularly known as DBanj, it’s been two decades of high-octane music hits from his days in the United Kingdom.
DBanj started out as a passive member of the defunct music group JJC and The 419 Squad headed by Funke Akindele’s estranged husband Skillz. The group released back to back hits such as Ewajo, Gbao, Atide among others. Skillz about the same period set up another group called Big Brovaz also domiciled in the United Kingdom.
While with the JJC, DBanj was basically limited to his harmonica. He was given a few cameo appearances here and there whenever the group had singing engagements.
DBanj became a hit when his path with that of Michael Collins popularly known as Don Jazzy crossed while in the United Kingdom. The chemistry they had led to the duo deciding to return to Lagos all in a bid to carve a niche for themselves, a decision that proved to be the right one. While they didn’t turn out to be successful in the early days of being in Nigeria, luck and success soon took a trip to their respective abode.
The hit track Tongolo was released and it was embraced instantly by the teeming Nigerian music population, those were the days music CDs flooded the popular Alaba International Market. DBanj and Don Jazzy under the auspices of Mo’Hits followed the Tongolo track with a never-seen-before type of music video shot by the iconic DJ Tee, the track and the video announced Mo’Hits to the world.
DBanj went on to release blockbuster hits such as Fall In Love featuring Nollywood Superstar Actress Genevieve Nnaji, Maje, Mobolowowon, Oliver Twist among other hits.

Skibanj as his South African fans call him is now back with another hit titled Since 04. The track has been met with mixed feelings from music fans all over with a section thinking the music star has had his shine and its time to call it a day. Others are of the opinion the new track 04 is a breath of fresh air which reflects the DBanj we used to know when he grabbed the headlines back in the day.
While the track is beginning to grow on people, it is left to be seen if music fans of this age popularly known as the Gen Z would show the KokoMaster some love with his newest effort, perhaps he could get to greet them specially!
