BREAKING: Tinubu Reacts After Supreme Court Rules Against 36 Governors On LG Autonomy

President Bola Tinubu has expressed his appreciation for the Supreme Court’s ruling affirming the constitutional rights of local governments, emphasizing its pivotal role in advancing effective grassroots governance.

The judgement was delivered against the position of the 36 states Governors who wanted the old system to remain where the funds of Local Government Areas, LGAs, will be paid to the state government accounts and they would also be able to appoint caretaker committees to run the LGAs in their states.

In a statement released on Thursday, Tinubu emphasised the significance of the judgment, describing it as a reinforcement of constitutional principles. The statement, signed by Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, highlighted the historical context of the decision and its potential impact on local governance.

“The Renewed Hope Agenda is a commitment to all Nigerians, regardless of faith, ethnicity, gender, political affiliation, or any perceived divisions among us,” Tinubu stated. “This country belongs to all of us. With this judgment, our citizens, especially the underserved, can now hold their local leaders accountable for their actions and inactions. The allocations to local government accounts will be transparent, and services must be delivered without excuses.”

Tinubu stressed that the responsibility now rests on local leaders to deliver services that benefit Nigerians at the grassroots level, ensuring tangible impacts of governance.

Tinubu lamented the challenges faced in providing essential services and public goods due to the weakening of local government structures, while praising the Supreme Court for upholding their autonomy, particularly in financial matters.
