Deborah Samuel: Why Atiku Deleted Twitter, Facebook Posts About Killing Of Sokoto 200-Level Student
Atiku Abubakar, the former Vice President and presidential candidate, has deleted a message he put on his Facebook and Twitter accounts criticizing the burning of Deborah Samuel, a 200-level student at Shehu Shagari College of Education in Sokoto State, on Thursday.
The girl was reportedly beaten to a pulp and burned alive by male Muslim pupils on Thursday after they accused her of disrespecting Prophet Muhammed via WhatsApp.
As residents in the vicinity became increasingly tense, the school district decided to halt academic activities indefinitely.
In a message on his social media accounts on Thursday, Atiku decried the incident, vowing that all those responsible for the killing must be brought to justice.
He wrote, “There cannot be a justification for such gruesome murder. Deborah Yakubu was murdered, and all those behind her death must be brought to justice. My condolences to her family and friends.”
Some religious extremists with Islamic names, however, flooded the comment areas, notably on Facebook, threatening to abandon Atiku’s presidential bid in 2023.
After multiple threats from Northerners, the posts were removed from Atiku’s social media accounts, as observed by NewsDirect on Friday morning.
