APC Candidate Reveals His Next Move After Losing To Fubara At Supreme Court

Tonye Cole, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate who contested the 2023 gubernatorial election in Rivers State, has reacted to the Supreme Court’s decision affirming Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s victory.

In a video statement shared on social media, Cole accepted the Apex Court’s judgment. He then emphasized his commitment to democratic principles and the rule of law.

“I acknowledge the recent Supreme Court pronouncement of Governor Siminalaiyi Fubara as governor of Rivers State,” Cole stated, underscoring his respect for the legal process and dedication to upholding democratic values.

He further expressed his determination to prioritize peace and collaborate with individuals within and outside of government to rejuvenate Rivers State for economic prosperity.

The Supreme Court, led by Justice Ibrahim Saulawa, dismissed Cole’s appeal on Thursday, citing a lack of merit. The court found that the appellants failed to substantiate issues related to non-compliance with the Electoral Act. Governor Fubara, representing the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), secured victory in the gubernatorial election with 302,614 votes, defeating Cole, his closest rival, who garnered 95,274 votes.

Tonye Cole initially contested the election results, citing irregularities, Electoral Act violations, and Fubara’s alleged failure to resign as Rivers State accountant-general before the election.

However, the Tribunal rejected Cole’s claims in October 2023, upholding Fubara’s victory due to the withdrawal of support from the sponsoring party. The Court of Appeal subsequently aligned with the decision of the petition tribunal, bringing closure to the legal challenges surrounding the gubernatorial election in Rivers State.
