Akpabio Breaks Record, Lands Top International Appointment
Senate President Senator Godswill Akpabio has achieved a significant milestone by being elected into the Executive Committee of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).
This accomplishment was announced by his Special Assistant on Media and Communication, Mr. Anietie Ekong, in a statement released in Abuja.
Ekong disclosed that Akpabio secured his position as an executive committee member of the global parliamentary union through votes from delegates worldwide. He emphasized that this election marked a historic event as Akpabio broke a 59-year-old jinx, becoming the first Nigerian to be elected into the executive committee since 1964.
The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, is a prestigious global organization comprising 179 member countries out of 193 worldwide. Established in 1889, the IPU is dedicated to promoting peace through parliamentary diplomacy and dialogue. Over its 135-year history, it has evolved into a truly global organization, facilitating parliamentary diplomacy and empowering parliaments and parliamentarians to advocate for peace, democracy, and sustainable development on a global scale.
Akpabio’s election took place during the 147th IPU Assembly held in Luanda, Angola, from October 21st to 27th, 2023. The assembly, hosted by the National Assembly of Angola, provided a platform for global delegates to deliberate on crucial issues affecting nations worldwide.
These discussions were aimed at strengthening trust between citizens and governance structures, enhancing the effectiveness, accountability, and representativeness of public institutions, and equipping parliaments to address the complex geopolitical, economic, and environmental challenges confronting the world.
