Aguiyi-Ironsi’s Late Wife, Victoria Buried In Umuahia
Victoria, the late wife of Major General Johnson Thompson Umunnakwe Aguiyi Ironsi, the first Nigerian military Head of State, was buried yesterday at her country house, Umuana Ndume Ibeku in Abia State’s Umuahia North Local Government Area.
Governor Okezie Ikpeazu commended the late Victoria Aguiyi Ironsi as a remarkable woman who demonstrated nobility, hard work, and comportment during her lifetime during the funeral service held at Saint Theresa’s Catholic Church, Afaraukwu Umuahia, over the weekend.
According to the Governor, the dead believed in and worked for Abia State’s and Nigeria’s peace, growth, and togetherness.
As he drew on the deceased’s vast expertise, he expressed a strong sense of personal loss.
Governor Ikpeazu, while noting that the deceased’s trust in Nigeria’s unity never wavered, said that her death signals the end of a wonderful chapter in our history.
He stated that the late General Aguiyi Ironsi was the true father of Nigerian unity since he was the Head of State who issued the Decree that unified the country, and that his assassination heralded the beginning of the threat to Nigeria’s unity.

The Abia Chief Executive, on the other hand, advised Nigerians to learn to extend hands of friendship across nationalities and hoped that the burial would put a stop to all incidents of injustice across the country, giving them a fresh hope to live as brothers and build a stronger nation.
Rev. Fr. Henry Maduka, the Chancellor of the Umuahia Catholic Diocese, stressed the importance of Christians turning to the Bible for answers to the nation’s many problems in his homily.
The late Noble Lady Victoria Aguiyi Ironsi was described by the cleric as a devout Christian who had complete faith in God and the Catholic faith, which enabled her to overcome the tough burden of raising her children after her husband’s death.
Ambassador Thomas Aguiyi Ironsi, the first son of the deceased and former Minister of Defense, thanked Governor Okezie Ikpeazu and a host of others for identifying with the family in a statement on behalf of the Aguiyi Ironsi family.
His mother, according to the former Nigerian envoy to Togo, was an example to Nigerian women who championed the cause of women’s rights, and she will be dearly missed.
