Nigeria has voiced “deep concern” over escalating tensions in the Middle East after Iran’s unprecedented attack on Israel.
The attack raised the prospect of a wider conflagration in a region where Nigeria is pushing for a universal commitment to peaceful resolution of conflicts.
Recall that, Iran pushed the shadow war between the two regional foes into the open on Saturday night when it launched more than 300 projectiles – including around 170 drones and over 120 ballistic missiles – towards Israel. Approximately 350 rockets were fired from Iran, Iraq, Yemen, and Lebanon’s Hezbollah, according to Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesperson Daniel Hagari.
Several world leaders including Nigeria have expressed concern after Iran’s attack on Israel.
President Bola Tinubu through his foreign Affairs Ministry has called on Iran and Israel “to exercise restraint” and “avoid a wider conflict in the Middle East,”
“In this critical period, it behoves the two countries to reflect on the universal commitment to peaceful resolution of conflicts, for the advancement of global peace and security”, the statement reads.
