BREAKING: Senate Vows To Take Action On EFCC After Akpabio Narrated His Ordeal
The Senate has made a decision to make some changes in the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
This development followed the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio’s narration of his ordeal in the hands of the anti-graft agency. The Upper Legislative Chamber vowed to effect the changes by reviewing the Act establishing the EFCC.
Akpabio announced the decision while revealing that the EFCC was more of a persecuting agency than a prosecution agency. The former Akwa Ibom Governor stated this during the screening and confirmation of Olu Olukayode and Muhammad Hammajoda, as Chairman and Secretary of the EFCC on the floor of the Senate on Wednesday.
The Senate President revealed that he was targeted by political opponents in the buildup to the 2023 general elections. He said a frivolous petition was written against him and he wrote back to state he would not respond to baseless petitions. However the former EFCC Chairman leaked his private letter “with the stamp of the EFCC to an online news platform, Sahara Reporters.”
Akpabio said: “I don’t want to talk about the EFCC. We have the gavel in this chambers, and we will amend the (EFCC) Act to strengthen it and make the agency more effective.”
