Barcelona Star Set To Receive 2020 Ballon d’Or Award

Barcelona Polish striker Robert Lewandowski could be handed the 2020 Ballon d’Or award.

Lewandowski was the favourite to win the 2020 edition, however, the award was later scrapped due to the COVID pandemic.

The two-time FIFA The Best Men’s Player of the Year winner, fired Bayern Munich to the Treble, including the Champions League final victory over Paris Saint-Germain.

He scored 55 goals in 47 games across all competitions and was widely tipped to land the award.

The award evaded him but talkSPORT reports that France Football, the magazine responsible for the award, are considering presenting him with the award many believed he deserved.

“In 2020 and 2021, I had the best years of my career,” Lewandowski recalled in a recent interview with German outlet Sport Bild. “Recently a friend sent me the statistics. I scored 100 goals in 85 games.”

He was in the running for the award in 2021 but was pipped by serial Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi.

However, according to Sport, an investigation into Messi’s victory in 2021 opened earlier this year over claims PSG had pressured France Football into favouring the Argentine.

Lewandowski finished second that year but now the magazine are reportedly concerned that the investigation has had a negative effect on its reputation and will therefore consider handing the striker the 2020 award.
