Why I Appointed Farouk Yahaya As Army Chief Of Staff, President Buhari Reveals

President Muhammadu Buhari claimed Farouk Yahaya was picked as Nigeria’s army leader ahead of dozens of his superiors because he has experience combating Boko Haram in the north-east.

Following the death of Ibrahim Attahiru, the former army leader, in an aircraft crash, Mr Yahaya was recently appointed chief of army staff.

According to NEWS DIRECT, Mr Buhari bypassed at least 29 senior officers in installing Mr Yahaya as army chief. The army’s senior officers are now being forced out.

Mr Buhari said Mr Yahaya was nominated because he was leading Nigeria’s campaign against Boko Haram in the north-east at the time and had the troops’ support and understanding, according to an interview with Arise TV aired on Thursday and monitored by NEWS DIRECT.
