Unknown Gunmen Kill Police Inspector, Injure Others On Roadblock In Anambra

On Sunday morning, unknown gunmen killed a police inspector and injured another at a roadblock in Onitsha, Anambra State.

At the Ukaegbu crossroads, near Ezeiweka road in Onitsha, the attackers began fire on the inspector and his colleagues on patrol.

Before the assailants swooped on them, the police squad set up a roadblock for a stop-and-search at the intersection, according to the Peoples Gazette.

The police patrol van was also burned, according to The Gazette, in addition to the shooting that left one person dead and others seriously injured.

In a statement given to The Gazette on Sunday evening, Anambra Police spokesman Ikenga Tochukwu claimed the attackers arrived in an ash sienna vehicle and began shooting irregularly at the officers on duty.

“Unfortunately, during the exchange of gunfire, one police inspector paid the supreme price and some sustain gunshot injuries. In a bid to escape the police responding team, they set the patrol vehicle ablaze,” Mr Tochukwu said.

Mr Tochukwu further stated that the state police command has intensified search within the Onitsha axis to identify and arrest the attackers, saying the command is not discouraged with the incident “but are more committed in delivering in their mandate on the protection of lives and properties.”
