BREAKING: FG Reveals When Twitter Ban Will Be Lifted

The restriction on operations on microblogging sites, such as Twitter, would be lifted “in a matter of days,” according to the Federal Government.

Alhaji Lai Mohammed, Minister of Information and Culture, provided this report following the week’s virtual Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, which was presided over by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo (SAN).

The Minister offered more specifics of the restrictions given to the microblogging site, adding that the majority of them had been accepted, as part of an update on the government’s negotiations with the platform.

He stated that aspects that are still outstanding, such as the establishment of a Twitter office and the establishment of a Twitter management cadre that will act as the country representative, are being addressed.

Even if Twitter has agreed to the criteria, Mohammed disclosed in the area of a Nigerian office that the earliest it can construct it is 2022.

The Minister expressed optimism that everything will be worked out via Twitter within a few days or weeks, despite Nigerians’ anxiety.

He stated that the Federal Government’s committee negotiating with Twitter will convene soon to offer recommendations on the accord.
