Major Clash Looms In LP As Abure’s Camp Ignores Warnings, Goes Ahead With National Convention
A major clash is looming in the Labour Party, LP, as the party’s leadership heads for a contentious National Convention.
Despite the controversy surrounding it, the LP last night affirmed that its convention slated for Nnewi, Anambra State, tomorrow will proceed as planned.
The convention was planned and approved by the leadership of the LP led by the embattled National Chairman, Julius Abure amid calls for his sack by various stakeholders of the party.
Acting National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, assured that all arrangements had been made for the event.
“Yes, the convention will hold as planned. Delegates have started arriving,” Ifoh confirmed.
Deputy National Chairman, Ayo Olorunfemi, also corroborated that the convention would proceed as scheduled.
The decision to hold the national convention has sparked a dispute between Abure and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), which is demanding his resignation. The party has changed the convention venue twice, from Benin City, Edo State, to Umuahia, Abia State, and finally to Nnewi in Anambra.
On Sunday, the founding fathers joined in calling for Abure’s removal. Despite objections from the NLC, the party has persisted with its plans for the convention.
The House of Representatives Caucus has called for the postponement of the convention, citing the need for further consultation and inclusivity among stakeholders.
Former NLC president Ayuba Wabba criticized Abure and his team for alleged illegality and deviation from the party’s founding ideology. He argued that Abure’s tenure had expired, emphasizing that a national convention cannot be held without preceding ward and state congresses. Wabba also maintained that the NLC holds ownership of the LP, as decided by a court, dismissing allegations of an attempt to hijack the party leveled against NLC President Joe Ajaero as mere sentiment.
