Kano Emir Suspends Village Head For Selling Land To Fulani Herdsmen

Abdullahi Sa’adu, the village head of Butu-Butu in the state’s Rimingado LGA, has been suspended by the Karaye emirate in Kano for selling land to Fulani ranchers.

Abdullahi Ganduje, the governor of Kano, established four new emirates in 2019. Karaye is one of them.

The emir of Karaye is Ibrahim Abubakar II (pictured).

The emirate’s spokesperson, Haruna Muhammad Gunduwawa, issued a statement on Friday announcing the suspension of the village chief.

“The Fulani migrants built a mosque on the land without following the due process which ignites conflict with host community,” the statement reads.

“The suspension is to pave way for proper investigation by a committee set up to look into the allegations against the traditional ruler.

“The District Head of Rimingado, Auwalu Ahmad Tukur (Magajin Rafin Karaye) had earlier written a petition to the Emir of Karaye, Ibrahim Abubakar II reporting the wrongdoing of the village head.”

“The village head was cautioned by both the District Head office and Rimin Gado local government council on selling the land.”

Meanwhile, the emirate has deployed Habibu Umar, the Madakin Shamaki, to supervise the village’s activities until the investigation is carried out.

Residents of Butu-Butu were urged to support and collaborate with Umar in order for him to carry out his duties properly, according to the emirate.

Between February and April, confrontations in the Oke-Ogun and Ibarapa axis of Oyo state resulted in the loss of lives and property due to indiscriminate land sales to non-residents.

Abdulganiy Oloogunebi, the Aseyin of Iseyin in Oyo, issued a warning in May to citizens of the state to “avoid selling land to foreigners” whose nationality was unknown.
