June 12: Police Use Gunshots To Break Up Peaceful Protest In Ijebu-Ode

In Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, certain police officers have opened fire on peaceful protestors on several occasions.

Ijebu-Ode is a large city in Ogun State, which is also the home state of the late M.K.O Abiola, the winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, whose birthday is commemorated as Nigeria’s Democracy Day.

News crews were able to capture a video footage that appears to show demonstrators scurrying to their heels as gunfire rang out in the background.

The Reporter was told it happened on Saturday at Lagos Garage in Ijebu-Ode.

“They requested that protesters should leave and we resisted. Before we could say Jack, they opened fire to scare away the protesters,” an eyewitness confirmed.

Abimbola Oyeyemi, the state police spokesperson, did not return calls or texts as of the time of reporting this story.

Protesters have been assaulted in various locations of Nigeria, according to reports.

NEWS DIRECT had eailer reported about a BBC reporter named Micheal was assaulted by a police officer in Mokola, Ibadan, Oyo State.

The reporter, who works for BBC Pidgin, was smacked while trying to videotape security officers harassing demonstrators.
