Lai Mohammed Denies Asking Obi Cubana To Loan Nigeria Money

Lai Mohammed, the Minister of Information and Culture, has denied requesting Obi Iyiegbu alias Obi Cubana, the Chairman of the Cubana Group, to lend money to Nigeria.

On Sunday, the Ministry of Information and Culture put a ‘Fake News’ tag on a news item saying that the minister made the statement on its verified Facebook page.

“Obi Cubana has this type of money, and Nigeria is borrowing money from China,” according to the story, which was published by an internet outlet. Cubana should lend us money since Nigeria is collapsing, according to Lai Mohammed.”

For the past four days, Obi Cubana has been trending on social media for hosting a spectacular burial for his mother in Oba, a town in Anambra State’s Idemili South local government area.

Several films from the ceremony show people throwing money around indiscriminately, while a concert was staged following the burial, with singers Davido, D’Banj, and Phyno among those who attended.

The event’s ‘naira rain’ prompted countless memes urging Nigeria to borrow money from Obi Cubana rather than China.

Since President Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) assumed office, the country’s debt has increased by N20.8 trillion to N32.92 trillion.

Under the 2018-2020 External Borrowing (Rolling) Plan, the Senate approved Buhari’s proposal for ongoing external loans totaling $8.3 billion and €490 million on Thursday.
