NUC Approves Establishment Of Ebonyi Medical Varsity
King David Umahi University of Medical Sciences, Uburu, Ohoazara LGA, Ebonyi State, has been approved by the National Universities Commission (NUC).
On Tuesday in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT Abuja, Prof Abubakar Rasheed, the Executive Secretary of the NUC, submitted the permission letter to the state governor, David Umahi.
Rasheed, who praised the governor for assisting in the establishment of the institution, noted that the country currently has 197 universities.
He stated that the university, which he believes would serve a population of no more than 5,000 students, can compete with institutions all around the world.
The Executive Governor of Ebonyi State, Umahi, also spoke, saying that the objective for establishing a medical university is to have a medical center of excellence that can compete with any other university or medical center in the country.
He applauded President Muhammadu Buhari for allocating N3.5 billion for the development of a cancer unit in the new institution.
According to the governor, “The university is established with the vision and mission that are consistent with the Nigerian National Health Policy (NHP) and Strategy aimed at achieving good Health for All Nigerians.
