On Sunday, the mayor of Kryvyi Rih, Ukraine, was found dead in his home with a gunshot wound. He was a member of a pro-Russian opposition political party.
It was uncertain whether Konstantin Pavlov committed suicide or was murdered.
“Today we are investigating three versions – murder, suicide and likewise the negligent handling of weapons,” the head of the Dnipropetrovsk provincial police, Anatoly Shchadilo, said at a news conference.
Mr Pavlov was discovered with his firearm and other items. They’re also looking at footage from a surveillance camera, they added.
Mr Pavlov was a member of the pro-Russia Platform for Life opposition party, which has been under fire from government officials in recent months.
In December 2020, the 48-year-old was elected mayor of the industrial metropolis with nearly 600,000 people.
President Volodymyr Zelensky grew raised in a regional village around 350 kilometers south of Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital.
Mr Zelensky had proclaimed on social media that he would be in charge of the probe himself.
