I used to beat my son for failing, allowed others beat him, turned out he is DYSLEXIC – Aisha Yesufu

Nigerian activist, Aisha Yesufu, revealed that she used to beat her son and even invite others to beat him because he was failing in school, only to find out he is DYSLEXIC.

Aisha Yesufu made this revelation while reacting to the viral video of the father beating his son while scolding him over his bad result.

This was me with my son! It was frustrating, most especially paying so much to give him the best of education & I also allowed others beat him.

Today, I regret every of that behaviour. I apologised & sought my son’s forgiveness when he turned 18. It turned out my son is DYSLEXIC

I saw this video yesterday & I felt the pain of it. The father’s frustration, the mother’s frustration & the child’s hopelessness.

That child is most likely dyslexic. He can’t read like his father said. He needs to be taught the way his brain understands

A cousin of mine once told me that we were wasting money sending our son to UK to study Arts, Media and Photography in his A levels.

In 2017 my son could finally use a scribe. It meant someone writing for him during exams and taking notes for him. It meant he told his thoughts to someone to put on paper for him. People need to be taught the way their brains are wired

The day my son’s GSCE result came out and he had failed I had a BBOG march to lead. I had to put my pains aside and focus on that march but at one time I broke down and cried so much. @MKabrik and @VisionaryRonica @FatimaAbbakaka gave me strength that day

School is the most frustrating time for them and they flourish out of school because while you were learning to pass they were learning PERSEVERANCE Kissing face with closed eyes

I understand many saying why did he miss English and Maths. He should at least try. These two subjects can be excruciatingly frustrating! Did you notice those were the only two he missed? Probably he couldn’t deal with those two. They were the worst for my son.

I have read a lot about dyslexia and my son sometimes explains to me but I have never been able to understand the notion of words moving on the page. That’s what they deal with. It can be frustrating

Many suffering from dyslexia have great strengths and this boy’s own is music. Emphasis should be on that.

My son and maths?! Gosh! The day my son got a C in maths while at The Regent Secondary school Abuja, we sang all the way home in the car. We were screaming and singing . Maths and English have shown my son. He kept failing and writing them. Till he conquered them.

No matter what, your child has his or her own talent. Look for those talents and help them develop it. Today my son is studying Film, Television and Digital media production!

Did you see where the boy tried to explain and the father isn’t listening? It is frustrating for the child. After my son was diagnosed with dyslexia, he did about a year of therapy to mitigate the years of abuse from parents, teachers and adults around

Did you see at one minute two secs when the mother(we assume) put the pillow to protect the child and the father hit the pillow? If it was herself she put maybe she would have been hit too? Probably why she did a video. But then, who knows?!

The last maths exam my son wrote, I told him it doesn’t matter whether he pass or not. All that mattered is he did his best. If he can’t get into university we will find alternative to university.

Luckily he passed!

Children are wired differently and we all need to appreciate that.

Some get As others Fs. We all want our children to be the ones getting the As but it doesn’t happen like that

Not everyone is an A student.
