Tension Mounts In Kano, NNPP, APC Clash As Supreme Court Is Set To Deliver Judgment

Tension is seriously brewing in Kano State in anticipation of the Supreme Court’s judgment on the governorship election.

There have been repeated clashes between the two main political parties slugging it out to maintain control over the state which have the Nigeria Police Force, Kano Command, to once again affirm its commitment to taking robust measures against any planned protests or actions that could disrupt the prevailing peace in the state.

Police Commissioner Muhammad Usaini Gumel made this declaration as the two major political parties, the New Nigerian People’s Party (NNPP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC), reaffirmed their commitment to a peace accord.

Commissioner Gumel highlighted the presence of the State Joint Security Committee, emphasizing that anyone who contravened the signed peace accord would face consequences.

Expressing frustration, he noted that despite the peace agreement, certain unidentified groups were determined to sow chaos and uncertainty in the ancient city. Commissioner Gumel stated, “We will not allow anybody, no matter his place in society, to cause disharmony and violence among Kano citizens who are peace-loving people.”

During discussions, Hashimu Dungurawa, the NNPP State Chairman, and Shehu Maigari, the State Deputy Chairman of APC, disagreed on the responsibility for the clashes following the first and second signing of peace accords in the State.

Hashimu Dungurawa, accusing APC members of inciting violence, asserted that his party, along with the State Governor Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, had collaborated with security forces to ensure peace.

On the other hand, APC Deputy Chairman Shehu Maigari placed blame for the loss of lives and violent protests squarely on specific parties, indicating that his party had no concerns.

Meanwhile, amid uncertainty in the state, the Supreme Court is set to deliver the final judgment on the case promising to communicate the date to the parties concerned.
