REWIND: Meet Four ‘Agitators’ Buhari’s Govt Attempted To Arrest Violently In The Last Four Years

Last Thursday, the operatives of the State Security Service (SSS) invaded the home of a self-styled Yoruba activist, Sunday Adeyemo also known as Sunday Igboho.

His vehicles, including his G-wagon, Prado Jeep, and some valuable properties including furniture and windows were reportedly destroyed.

In this report, we review cases of three individuals that SSS either arrested or attempted to arrest in a violent raid under the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.

1. Omoyele Sowore

The State Security Service (SSS) on August 4, 2019, confirmed that its operatives took Omoyele Sowore into custody.

The social critic and publisher of Sahara Reporters, was violently arrested in Lagos at midnight and was taken into custody because he called for a revolution in Nigeria.

Mr Sowore was later arraigned and charged for treasonable felony. Since then, he cannot leave Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja in order not to jump the bail after intervention of international communities.

2. Nnamdi Kanu

Security operatives invaded the home of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra,  Nnamdi Kanu in September 2017.

His lawyer who raised the alarm then, Ifeanyi Ejiofor said “the situation is serious. My client’s whereabouts has remained unknown. His entire house has been shattered with bullets and missiles.

“The soldiers had just forcefully gained entrance into his house after shooting for about 40 minutes. His entrance gate was broken and forced open. Their mission is still unknown as every person seen in his house has surrendered, including his aged parents.

3. Sunday Igboho

The SSS invaded Mr Igboho’s house barely 72 hours before the planned rally in Lagos by Mr Igboho and others to further canvas a Yoruba nation.

The spokesperson of SSS, Peter Afunaya, who confirmed the raid in a press conference in Abuja said a total of seven AK 47 rifles were recovered, alongside pump action guns and 5,000 rounds of ammunition including other weapons.

He said security operatives recovered the weapons after a “hot gun duel between them and Igboho’s guards.”

The SSS also admitted that two of Mr Igboho’s men were killed in the process while a security agent was shot on the right hand and is currently responding to treatment.

4. Deji Adeyanju

The Nigerian Police on November 28, 2018, confirmed that its operatives arrested Deji Adeyanju.

Deji Adeyanju is a political activist and convener of Concerned Nigerians, a pro-democracy and good governance group.

He was detained in Abuja at a rally with the slogan “Police Are Not Politicians, Save Our Democracy.”

Deji and two other people were apprehended in front of the country’s capital’s force headquarters.

Protesters took to the streets to demand that the police remain neutral during the upcoming general election.

Some protesters were arranging the banners and placards meant for the rally when the police swooped on them.
