Zuma Undergoes Surgery, To Remain In Hospital
South Africa’s imprisoned ex-president Jacob Zuma has undergone surgery and will remain in hospital for further procedures, according to the government. Zuma was moved from prison to a health facility earlier this month.
“Mr Zuma underwent a surgical surgery on Saturday, August 14, 2021, with other surgeries expected in the coming days,” the correctional services department said in a statement, adding that it couldn’t foresee a release date at this time.
On August 6, the 79-year-old was admitted to the hospital for observation for an unexplained illness, and he has stayed there ever since.
Zuma’s long-running corruption prosecution over a two-decade-old arms deal was postponed last week pending a medical report proclaiming Zuma’s competence to stand trial.
Zuma began serving a 15-month prison sentence in a different case last month for ignoring a committee investigating state crimes during his presidency from 2009 to 2018.
