Girl commits suicide after being punished for being in a relationship

Police in Bomet County are investigating an incident where a class seven pupil committed suicide, allegedly by ingesting poisonous pesticide.

The 16-year-old is said to have taken the pesticide as she went to bed on Tuesday night, at their home in Mogogsiek Location in Konoin Sub-County.

Her father David Tonui said that the girl was later discovered foaming and struggling on the bed by her younger sister.

She was rushed to the Litein Hospital for medical attention.

“I rushed her to Litein AIC Mission Hospital immediately and on arrival, she was pronounced dead,” her father told the police.

It has emerged that the girl was protesting against her parents’ decision to punish her earlier over suspicion that she was in a romantic relationship.

Konoin Sub-County Police Commander Alex Shikondi confirmed the incident adding that a probe has begun.

Mogogsiek Location Senior Chief David Langat said that the deceased had been having issues with her parents about her reported love affair, before taking her life.

“The girl is already a teenager, and the parents had suspected that she was in a relationship and they had warned her severally, but she continued,” he said.

Cases of suicide among minors have been on then increase in the county lately.
