Igangan Attack: How Fulani Herdsmen Killed Amotekun Commander, Three Others

Four citizens, including a commander of the South-West security arm, Amotekun, were killed by gunmen alleged to be Fulani herdsmen who invaded Igangan, Ibarapa North Local Government Area, Oyo State.

The gunmen, who were dressed in custom attire, assaulted the town on Friday night, shooting intermittently, according to SaharaReporters.

According to a source, the attack killed the Commander of Amotekun Corps in Ibarapa Central, simply named as Muri, as well as three other locals.

Hilux vehicles, an 18-seater Hummer bus, and a Toyota Sienna bus sporting customs camouflage were claimed to have invaded the town.

The convener, Oladiran Oladokun, an Igangan development advocate, corroborated the attack, saying it was an effort to infiltrate the state via the axis, a border village, which was stopped by local security officers.

“They came in customs and military camouflage to fool our people and twist the narrative that they were security personnel storming the town in search of smugglers,” Oladokun claimed.

Despite the attacks’ frequency, he voiced disappointment over insufficient security.

The new incident comes only weeks after gunmen believed of being Fulani herders attacked the community, killing over 20 people.

Sunday Adeyemo, also known as Sunday Igboho, issued an eviction notice to herders in the area in February, blaming them for the area’s insecurity.

Seriki Saliu and Iskilu Wakili, two Fulani leaders in the town, were recently removed from the region by local security forces after they were accused of conspiring with kidnappers who kidnapped some of the locals for ransom.

Even after the ransom was paid, some of the kidnapped victims were slain.
