Chef slits lawyer’s throat, steal money to pay hotel bill

Detectives attached to the Homicide Section, State Criminal Investigations and Intelligence Department (SCIID), Panti, Yaba, Lagos, have arrested a chef for allegedly slitting the throat of a female lawyer at the Opebi, Ikeja area of the metropolis. The chef, Mr. Joshua Usulor, was alleged to have killed Barrister Feyitayo Obot (34) inside a hotel room at Opebi, Ikeja area of the state.

The 21-year-old Usulor was arrested on February 28, on Victoria Island, a month after he allegedly committed the murder. He was said to have gone into hiding after allegedly killing Obot. The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), CSP Chike Oti, confirmed the incident. Oti explained that the suspect sneaked into the victim’s room, stabbed her and then slit her throat in order to rob her.

He said: “After ensuring that the woman was dead, Usulor stole her N26,000 and mobile phone before fleeing the room. The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Zubairu Muazu, deployed homicide detectives to the hotel after the command received report about a murder in one of the rooms. The policemen collected important exhibits for forensic analysis.”

The PPRO said the victim’s body had multiple stab wounds on the abdominal region. He added that her throat was also slit open with a sharp object. Oti disclosed that an autopsy was carried out on Obot’s body.

The autopsy result revealed that the victim died as a result of exsanguination (excessive loss of blood), disruption of the left jugular vein and sharp force trauma. Oti said that although the suspect absconded after committing the crime, Muazu directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) in charge of SCIID, Mrs. Yetunde Longe, to fish out and prosecute the culprit.

He said: “Painstaking investigation led to the arrest of the suspect, Joshua Usulor, on February 28, at his hideout on Victoria Island, Lagos. During interrogation, the suspect confessed to have committed the crime.

He said he never knew the victim before and only wanted to rob her in order to offset his own hotel bills because he had spent two days above what he paid for. To execute the plan undetected, he sneaked into the deceased’s room to steal her money and her phones but she struggled with him. He overpowered her and then stabbed her with a sharp knife in the stomach.” The suspect reportedly said: “I used the same knife to slit her throat.

Satisfied that the woman was dead, I made away with her phones and a cash of N26,000.” Investigation revealed that the deceased was a lawyer who came to Lagos for a business meeting and lodged in the hotel at Opebi, Ikeja.

Oti said that the suspect would be charged to court for murder while the case file would be duplicated and sent to the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) for legal advice.

In another development, the police yesterday arrested a robbery suspect at 66, Olaitan Sebanjo Street, Lekki after he allegedly attacked Miss Oluwatosin Graig. The suspect, Amara Ezeodum, was arrested after an anti-crime patrol team heard the screams of the victim. Police said he was subsequently chased, caught and a gun was recovered from him.
