BREAKING: Court Dismisses Suit Challenging Twitter Operations In Nigeria

On Wednesday, the Federal High Court in Abuja dismissed a complaint filed by Adamu Garba, a former Presidential candidate, challenging Twitter’s operations in Nigeria.

The verdict was handed down by Justice Abubakar, according to the Socio-economic Rights and Accountability Project’s verified Twitter account.

During the #EndSARS protests in 2020, Garba, a businessman and former senator, requested the court to prohibit Twitter from operating in any region of Nigeria.

He accused Twitter of “sponsoring” the country’s #EndSARS protests.

“An order instructing the respondent to cease the functioning of Twitter in any portion of the Federal Republic of Nigeria’s territory,” the ex-federal legislator requested the court.

“An order directing the respondents to pay the petitioner $1 billion in damages jointly.”

Citizens came to the streets in Nigeria in October 2020 to demand a stop to the activities of the notorious Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the Nigerian Police.

In a tweet on Wednesday, SERAP said, “BREAKING: Following application by SERAP, Justice Abubakar of the Federal High Court (Court 5), Abuja today struck out the suit by Mr Adamu Garba, APC member, seeking to stop Twitter from operating within the Nigerian cyberspace.

“Mr Adamu filed the suit in 2020.”
