BREAKING: Benin Republic Files Fresh Charges Against Sunday Igboho
Benin Republic has filed new accusations against Sunday Adeyemo, also known as Sunday Igboho, a Yoruba Nation activist who was arrested in the country last Monday.
After Monday’s hearing, where Igboho was ordered to remain in police detention in Benin Republic, Ibrahim Salami, one of Sunday Igboho’s lawyers in Cotonou, Benin Republic, revealed the fresh charges.
Salami had stated before the hearing that the legal team expected the Nigerian government to file extradition charges against the activist.
However, he claimed that when Sunday Igboho returned in court on Monday, he was met with new charges.
Igboho was also remanded, according to the law professor, to allow police to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the charges, which included unlawful migration, questionable collusion with immigration agents, and an attempt to incite public disorder.
Because the Federal Government has yet to submit official extradition charges against Igboho, Salami had expected Igboho to be released on Monday.
He explained that the prior claims that led to Igboho’s inclusion on the blacklist had been successfully addressed during the hearing.
Some of the claims, he added, could not be proven, including arms trafficking, instigating violence that might cause societal unrest, and sowing discord in Nigeria.
“First, the judge ruled that Sunday Igboho entered into the Benin Republic through an illegal means. They also want to investigate how Sunday Igboho conspired with others to enter Benin Republic through wrong means.
“They also want to know how long he has been in Benin republic and his plans in the country. They also raised a charge on whether he wants to come and cause unrest or social disturbance in Benin Republic,” the lawyer said in an interview with BBC Yoruba.

After Igboho’s five lawyers failed to persuade the prosecutor that he had no case to answer when they were arrested last Thursday, the Beninese court deferred the case until Monday (yesterday).
Ropo, the agitator’s wife, was released by Beninese authorities, but the 48-year-old activist was returned to police prison.
The PUNCH is unable to confirm whether Igboho’s wife, Ropo, will be re-arrested for alleged illegal migration.
