Lauretta Onochie: Senate Rejects Buhari’s Nominee As INEC Commissioner

The nomination of Lauretta Onochie, a presidential assistant, as a commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission was denied by the Senate (INEC).

After the head of the INEC committee, Kabiru Gaya, submitted a report in plenary, the higher legislative chamber rejected her nomination.

President Muhammadu Buhari nominated Onochie for the position in October 2020.

Concerns that she is a member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) provoked controversy, but a presidential advisor confirmed she quit her membership in the ruling party in 2019.

Onochie’s assertion was confirmed to be untrue by NewsDirect.

Various civil society organizations have staged protests against Onochie’s nomination.

Gaya said Onochie was disqualified based on federal character standards when presenting the report on Thursday, adding that there is now a sitting commissioner from Delta state, where Onochie is from.
