Bandits Demand N110m Ransom For Kidnapped Niger State Islamiyya Students, Give Deadline

Bandits kidnapped around 200 students from the Salihu Tanko Islamiyya School in Tegina, Rafi Local Government Area, Niger State, and are seeking N110 million in ransom to release the victims.

The bandits, who threatened to kill the students if their demands were not met by Tuesday midnight, allegedly phoned the school’s headmaster, Alhaji Abubakar Alhassan, to express their demands.

“I was baffled when the kidnappers declared to me that the sum of N110m should be paid to secure the release of the pupils and threatened to kill all the children if the money is not paid by the end of today (Tuesday)”, he said.

The bandits also revealed that only 150 students are in their captivity, according to the Headmaster.

In response to the development, Governor Abubakar Sani Bello’s Chief Press Secretary, Mary Noel Berje, said the state administration has put in place the required mechanism to secure the safe release of the students. She, on the other hand, ruled out paying the thieves a ransom.

“Government is on the pursuit of the bandits and efforts are being put in place to identify them.

“The number of the kidnapped school children is not fully ascertained, however, efforts by security agencies to secure their release has been intensified.

“We don’t pay ransom to abductors. We are trying to negotiate to see how we can bring them back safely.” She said.

Given the state government’s refusal to pay the hoodlums a ransom, families and concerned members of the public have begun a fund-raising campaign to see if they can fulfill the robbers’ deadline to prevent the children from being slaughtered, according to NEWS DIRECT.
