Nigeria At 61: Governor Masari Expresses Worry Over Perpetual Ethnic Conflict

On the 61st anniversary of Nigeria’s independence, Governor of Katsina State, Aminu Bello Masari, has expressed concern about the country’s ongoing ethnic violence.

Governor Masari also expressed his dissatisfaction with the way citizens manage issues relating to areas of the country other than their own. He stated that such indifference has the potential to pull the country apart.

According to the Governor, in order for Nigeria to become the country of our dreams, we must abandon those tendencies that exploit our fault lines and pit one segment of the country against another in an unnecessary conflict.

Governor Masari made the announcement in a press statement sent to DAILY POST by the state Director General of Media, Abdul Labaran Malumfashi, on the 61st anniversary of Nigeria’s independence.

No nation can fulfill its goals if its citizens are continually at odds with one another due to diverging proclivities, according to the declaration.

In order for Nigeria to become the country of “our dreams,” he stated, “we must not allow tendencies to exploit our fault lines and push one area against another in unnecessary conflict.”

“As the nation ages, our attitude should reflect the journey which has brought us this far together, and reason behind the journey,” he said.

He admonished Nigeria citizens to remain steadfast in their belief for a strong and united Nigeria irrespective of the daunting security challenges facing the nation.

Governor Masari said:

“As the nation ages, our attitude should reflect the journey which has brought us this far together, and the reason behind the journey as no nation can achieve its goals whose citizens are constantly in conflict with one another on account of divergent tendencies.

“Our tendency to regard the travails of a section of the country that is not ours with lackadaisical attitude is not helpful to the collective interest of the nation.

“In the race towards building a better, stronger and united nation, we should not allow divisive sentiments to put us asunder.

“We would do well to realise that whatever affects one part of Nigeria affects all of Nigeria, and it is in the interest of us all to collectively face any challenge affecting a section of the country, as doing otherwise will only give room for the adversity to envelope the whole country.

“Let us also put aside our different tongues and creeds and confront our challenges as Nigerians.”

He also seized the opportunity to seek for more support for President Muhammadu Buhari in his bid to reposition the country towards the path of sustainable development.

“The President needs our sustained commitment and prayers to enable him successfully continue on the path he has started to steer the nation through the numerous challenges threatening its corporate existence,” Governor Masari said.

He also urged Nigerians to appreciate and support the efforts of the security agencies in bringing to an end the various security challenges confronting the country.
