Akeredolu Affirmed As Ondo Governor By Supreme Court

Rotimi Akeredolu has been confirmed as the legitimately elected governor of Ondo State by the Supreme Court.

The court dismissed the appeal brought by Eyitayo Jegede, a Peoples Democratic Party candidate, in a decision handed down on Wednesday.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) proclaimed Akeredolu the victor of the governorship election on October 10, 2020, after he received 292,830 votes to overcome Jegede’s 195,791 votes.

Jegede, on the other hand, went to the tribunal to contest the governor’s reelection.

The PDP candidate told the tribunal that “irregularities, violence, and intimidation of qualified voters” marred the election.

He also claimed that Akeredolu and deputy governorship candidate Lucky Aiyedatiwa were not properly nominated by their party, the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The panel, however, dismissed Jegede’s case in an April 20 decision.

The tribunal had decided that “the concerns stated in this petition are resolved issues of internal affairs and management of a political party over which this tribunal has no jurisdiction.”

Jegede’s appeal was likewise denied by the Court of Appeal on June 16.

The PDP candidate’s lawyer, Onyechi Ikpeazu, has filed an appeal with the appellate court, claiming that Akeredolu’s nomination by his party was unlawful.
