BREAKING: APC Wins As Supreme Court Dashes LP’s Hope In Lagos

The Supreme Court has rejected the appeal brought forth by Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, the candidate of the Labour Party (LP), aiming to annul the election of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

In a judgment delivered on Friday, January 12, the apex court declared the appeal as lacking merit.

Justice Mohammed Lawal Garba, delivering the lead judgment, emphasized that the appeal lacked merit. He clarified that the acquisition of United States citizenship by Deputy Governor Femi Hamzat did not strip him of his Nigerian citizenship, given that he is a citizen by birth.

Additionally, Justice Garba highlighted that a Nigerian citizen by birth who acquires the citizenship of another country is not disqualified from contesting an elective position, unless the individual renounces Nigerian citizenship as stipulated by Section 29 of the Constitution.

Furthermore, the court affirmed the verdict of the Court of Appeal, which had earlier upheld the election victory of Sanwo-Olu.
